Tiktok is a relatively new social media platform that has gained a ton of popularity over the last few years. You are either on Tiktok or you’ve at least heard of it, as this form of making and sharing videos has changed the way we interact online. This new platform has changed the way information is shared and viewed. Recently, it’s been discovered that nearly 40% of Generation Z uses Tiktok as a search engine instead of Google.

As Tiktok grew over time, workers and experts in public health such as nurses, epidemiologists, physicians, as well as many other health workers joined. Apart from their life and work, they take the time to educate others on information about public health. Videos are made on topics such as COVID-19, vaccinations, and more. Many of their posts are an effort to share new information and reduce misinformation that is spread.
Makes Scientific Knowledge More Accessible
If you are aware of scientific articles and papers, they can be daunting if you are not well versed in the field. Knowing how to read science articles is just as vital as understanding the content within these articles. Due to the nature of the one and three-minute videos, information is usually shared quickly in a manner that is easily digestible. The way Tiktok is structured also allows for the original poster to comment back in word or video form, making it an interactive way of obtaining knowledge. While restricted to only a few minutes, Tiktok is a quick, free, and fun way to learn about a topic- but always be sure this knowledge comes from a trusted and reliable source.
A New Place for CHWs
If you search #communityhealthworkers on TikTok, the hashtag has nearly 300,000 views. Some of the top videos include Community Health Workers sharing “A Day in the Life” videos, and others are education on what CHWs are. A Tiktok grows as a platform, we can only hope education on who and what CHWs are grows as well.
